Henri drove us to the train station in Offenburg, Germany. From there we took the train to Kaiserslaurten. Fortunately, we had made reservations because the hotel was full. There are many conventions this time of year and without reservations, we would have been SOL.
We took the local bus to Sembach and walked about a mile or so to the base, where guards turned us back. Dennis was disappointed, but not surprised. The AF base is now an army base.
Since we had a four-hour wait for the return bus,we walked around this very small town for a couple of hours. Nothing was open. I sat in the sunshine, bundled in my raincoat and Dennis’s over my legs. Fortunately, I had my Kindle and could read; Dennis had nothing. We made it back to Kaiserlaurten around 7:15.
yes i was there for 3 years also from 1967-1970, but dennis and i didn’t know each other then.
i think they should have let him on the base. we were the troops before these guys were even born.
Yes, Phil, I remember Dennis and you talking about your experiences in Sembach. Dennis was disappointed in not being allowed to enter.
Oh that to bad they wouldn’t let you in to the base, but at least he tried.
Since 9-11 security on bases is much stricter. For this reason, Dennis thought he might be denied access. I still was a thrill for him to be there.
